2017 IDF Walk for Primary Immunodeficiency – Atlanta

Here’s why we walk with the Immune Deficiency Foundation in the Walk for Primary Immunodeficiency.  So far we’ve walked in both Atlanta and Philadelphia in their first walks ever held.

My son Frankie is 6 years old and has a Primary Immune Deficiency of Unknown Etiology. He has already had bone marrow transplant two times. His sister, Nina, was his bone marrow donor both times. Together we lived in between the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House for his first entire year of life. Then had to move near the hospital for another 3 years due to continued hospitalizations over that period of time. Frankie’s Immune Deficiency does not have a name and Doctors and scientists are still studying him in labs all over the world.

He is doing well now with treatments but is highly susceptible to viral illnesses that cause him to become hospitalized.  Frankie has a social circle in our neighborhood of boys his own age that he plays with after school each day and he has just begun to attend school this year after a couple of years of home-bound education. It is our hope that he will be able to enjoy school with his peers at least during the warm months as he grows up and hopefully gets stronger and more self-aware.

The immune deficiency foundation has helped our family tremendously throughout the past 6 years. We’ve been able to meet other families and patients with diseases similar to Frankie’s. We’ve also been able to attend retreats with similar families and speak to doctors from all over the country.
